Will’s membership record at the Flyingdales Group of Artists states:
My subject matter is mainly landscape; the landscape of Danby dale where I live, and the surrounding North Yorkshire Moors. Northumberland, especially Holy Island, holds a special fascination too. The inevitable seasonal changes, night and day and the extremes of weather, bringing with them endless variations of light, colour and mood, provide the inspiration and focus for my painting and printmaking. While landscape features in my linocuts, I am occasionally drawn to the dramatic imagery of Industrial Teesside or the unique and fascinating shapes of Yorkshire cobbles. Their boldness of form and colour offer limitless possibilities for the medium of printmaking.

Born in North East England, where he spent most of his life, Will, who died in 1998, was known especially for linocuts, produced on a Victorian press in his studio at his home on the North York Moors. Many of his pictures reflect the moors, coastline and contrasting landscape of the industry in his local area, but Will also found inspiration in the varied landscape right across the North of England and Scotland. It has been said that his work has a quietness about it: a gentleness which grew out of his love for this part of the world.

Taylor studied at Sheffield College of Art, 1936-39 and at the Royal College of Art, 1939-43. He then taught at Sheffield College of Art where in 1963 he established the History of Art Department. He was Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design at Sheffield Polytechnic, 1972-75. He organized major shows of Aubrey Beardsley and Edward Burne-Jones at the Mappin Art Gallery and made a film Portrait of Beardsley. Taylor exhibited at the Royal Academy, New English Art Club, Leicester and Redfern Galleries and overseas.

Taylor, William S
1920 – 2010
Painter, teacher, writer, exhibition organiser and film-maker, born in Sheffield. He studied at Sheffield College of Art, 1936-39, and at the Royal College of Art, 1939-43. He taught at Sheffield College of Art where in 1963 he established the History of Art Department. He was Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design at Sheffield Polytechnic, 1972-75. He holds a Master of Philosophy degree in art history from Nottingham University. He has organised major shows of Aubrey Beardsley and Edward Burne-Jones at Mappin Art Gallery and made the film Portrait of Beardsley. He has exhibited at the RA, NEAC, at Leicester and Redfern Galleries and in New Zealand and Canada. Taylor’s pictures combine figure and landscape with strong Neo-Romantic overtones, and are saturated with lyricism and a sense of longing. His wife Audrey (Wallis) a talented sculptor and painter who won a scholarship to the RCA 1940-43 was both his model and muse.
