Picture Postcard Railings by Chris Topp

Extract from the Public Monuments & Sculpture Association:

Thirteen steel relief panels incorporated into the promenade railings. Each brightly-painted relief takes the form of a picture postcard on the theme of the seaside at Redcar: the steelworks; fairground rides; fishing boat in the high seas; an old style lifeboat; a Punch and Judy Show; ice cream; donkey rides; fish and chip shop; a disco scene.

With a brief to design railings that would suggest something of the history of Redcar, Topp’s picture postcard reliefs were the winning entry in a competition held by the former Langborough Council. Installed in 1994, the railings were one of a scheme of public pop-art features to decorate the redeveloped esplanade.(1)
