Transco

Gasometers or gas holders as they are more commonly known, are visible landmarks in every major city across the country. Many people see these holders without even really noticing them, the view that they offer is usually one of a huge rusted circular container. Generally gas holders are painted 7-8 years at a huge cost, so it is not surprising that they are painted in one colour over the period of time.

TVA teamed up with Middlesbrough Borough Council and Transco, to provide an alternative painting design for the holders in Middlesbrough (the 2 holders are sited alongside the A66 and are viewed by thousands of drivers every day).

Clare’s design (left) is based on bold geometric shapes, which form a distinguishable pattern from a distance. The design on the right, utilises the existing faded/stained lines of the gas holders
