Tugboat by Victoria Brailsford

A marker post with the top carved as tugboat. It is one of a series of permanent craftworks along the Teesdale Way, a riverside footpath between Cargo Fleet, Middlesbrough and Low Middleton. The series includes eight roughly carved and painted marker posts, stiles and signs by Victoria Brailsford, nine inscribed signs by the lettercutter, Vivien Mousdell, two carved entrances and seating at Bassleton Woods, Thornaby by Antony Holloway, and ‘Oak Leaf’ (terracing at Preston Park in the shape of an oak leaf suggesting the flow and line of the Tees) by Alain Ayers.

A series of markers erected by Cleveland Arts, Cleveland County Council and Northern Arts at a cost of £30,000 with financial assistance from Northumbrian water and advice from Common Ground’s ‘Campaign for Local Distinctiveness’. The aim was to encourage people to walk along the banks of the Tees. By April 1993 there were 22 in place between Middleton and the Transporter Bridge in Middlesbrough. With the exception of the ‘Cormorant’ marker post at Cargo Fleet viewing platform and Alain Ayers’s ‘Oak Leaf’, these were all erected in 1991.(1)
