Writing for Performance Master Class

Master Class Content

Most playwrighting courses, including those run by some of our biggest new writing theatres, tell you to ‘write what you know’. But what if your own life doesn’t contain a great deal of material? Or what if you’ve plundered what you can and now need to look further afield for inspiration?

This practical workshop seeks to help intermediate level dramatic writers write what they don’t know, with reference to professional play texts, including the writer’s own award-winning play How To Disappear Completely And Never Be Found. It will cover interview techniques, the process of creating drama from fact-based research (which is different from ‘verbatim theatre’) and the wider question of what it means to research creatively. Participants will develop an understanding of how to go about writing about subject’s beyond their own experience with legitimacy, authenticity and integrity.
